Device and browser compatibility for Tellet interviews.
Simple answer: Any reasonably modern phone, tablet, or computer with a current version of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge.
A current version of any of these works well.
Also supported: Brave, Opera (Chromium-based browsers)
Any modern browser from the last few years already supports everything an interview needs:
If a participant is on a very old or stripped-down browser, the interview will show a message recommending Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge.
Any reasonably modern computer works. For video, you'll need a webcam (built-in or USB); for audio, a microphone (built-in, headset, or USB). All Macs have both built in.
Modern phones and tablets are fully supported. On older or budget devices, text and audio always work; video may be slower, limited, or unreliable. To record video, you need enough free storage and — since video uses noticeably more mobile data than text or audio — Wi-Fi is recommended when possible.
Any reasonably modern webcam or phone camera is more than sufficient — built-in or external USB both work. On mobile, use the front camera for self-recording or the back camera to show products and spaces; you can switch between them while recording.
Built-in laptop and phone microphones work fine. A headset, wired earbuds, or Bluetooth earbuds (AirPods, Galaxy Buds, etc.) work even better, since they reduce echo and background noise.
First use: The browser asks for permission to use the camera and microphone (the exact wording varies by browser)
Participant action: Choose to allow access
Frequency: Usually once per device (unless cache is cleared)
If you blocked the camera or microphone by mistake, re-allow it and refresh the page:
The interface works on any modern screen, including small and compact phones. Both portrait and landscape work; landscape is handy for typing, video, and longer interviews. The layout adapts instantly when you rotate the device.
Not supported:
Pattern: If designed for web browsing with camera/microphone, probably works. If designed for entertainment or reading, doesn't work.
