Dynamic Variables in Discussion Guides

Dynamic variables personalise interview questions by replacing placeholder text with values passed through URL parameters.

Syntax

Pattern: %%variableName%%

Variables use double percent signs before and after the variable name.

Example:

• Question text: "Tell me about your experience with %%brand%%."
• URL: https://chat.tellet.ai/[PROJECT_ID]?brand=Nike
• Participant sees: "Tell me about your experience with Nike."

How It Works

1. Write questions with %%variableName%% placeholders
2. Pass values via URL parameters when sharing interview
3. System replaces placeholders with actual values from URL
4. Participants see personalised questions

Variable Naming

Case sensitivity:

• Variable names are case-insensitive
• %%brand%% and %%Brand%% are treated the same

Allowed characters:

• Letters (a-z, A-Z)
• Numbers (0-9)
• Underscores (_)
• Use capital letters to separate words (e.g. firstName) for readability

Examples:

• %%firstName%%
• %%product_name%%
• %%orderNumber%%
• %%purchaseDate%%

Multiple Variables

You can use multiple variables in questions and opening message.

Question:
"As a %%userType%% of %%productName%%, what features do you use most in %%category%%?"

URL:
https://chat.tellet.ai/[PROJECT_ID]?userType=premium%20member&productName=TelletPro&category=analytics

Participant sees:
"As a premium member of TelletPro, what features do you use most in analytics?"

URL Encoding

Special characters must be URL-encoded:

• Space — Encoded: %20 or +; Example: John%20Doe
• & — Encoded: %26; Example: AT%26T
• = — Encoded: %3D; Example: x%3D5
• ? — Encoded: %3F; Example: why%3F
• # — Encoded: %23; Example: issue%2323

Fallback behaviour

If the URL parameter is missing, the %% markers are stripped and the participant sees the bare variable name as plain text (e.g. "Tell me about product."). Always test your links without parameters.

Example:

• Question: "Tell me about %%product%%."
• URL without parameter: https://chat.tellet.ai/[PROJECT_ID]
• Participant sees: "Tell me about product."

1. Create test URLs with different parameter values
2. Click each link to verify variables replace correctly
3. Check that questions are grammatically correct after replacement
4. Test URL without parameters to see fallback behaviour

Example: Personalised Product Feedback

Opening message:
"Hi %%firstName%%! Thank you for purchasing %%productName%% from us. We'd love to hear about your experience."

Question 1:
"How are you using %%productName%% in your daily routine?"
